Do LED's improve the environment over fluorescents?

We've been considering redesigning the Down Low Glow to use an LED light source. As opposed to fluorescents, LEDs don't contain any mercury. That means the factories where their made don't have mercury vapors. But is there a seamy underside of LEDs? Maybe so. Got a comment?
