In addition to cruising around Rochester, I have also participated in the weekly Tuesday Night Urban Assault, an intense mountain bike adventure around Rochester. They often get up to 50, 60, sometimes 70 riders. In order to keep track of everyone, we all get a number. Periodically throughout the night, we'll stop and count off, just to make sure we didn't lose anyone. Also, everyone communicates possible dangers, such as "Car back!", or "pothole!" or "Pedestrian up ahead". You'll hear it repeated several times as it makes it's way from one end of the group to the other. Same thing with "slowing!", "Stopping!", and "Right/Left Turn". Of course on a cruiser ride there is often music so the warnings may be ineffective, and I am sure people probably don't usually get left behind so the number thing probably won't be necessary. But that's just how the MTBer's do it, and so far they have had a safe track record for the 15 years they have been doing it.
And of course, everyone there has lights and helmets. Now, I personally can't wear a bike helmet while riding a cruiser (it just doesn't feel right), but I definitely deck out the cruiser with lights, blinkies and even a string of battery powered xmas lights. And at least one cruiser in our group has the Down Low Glow right now, soon to be more!
Be safe and HAVE FUN!

Would you use a helmet like this?
I've been getting a lot of complements on my helmet lately. I got it from Kipchoge whose Pleasant Revolution rock tour got sponsored by Nutcase.
